Flash floods in Kota Kinabalu yet again

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 28, 2014: The heavy rain which lasted more than 2 hours since noon yesterday, caused flash floods in several areas in Sabah. This event created massive traffic congestion as the time closed in to the end of office hours. The rain stopped around 5pm, as the water level slowly recedes in affected areas.

Photos shared by a Facebook user, Eric Constantine shows the devastating effect of the flash floods yesterday,

It was reported that an 11-year-old boy drowned while swimming in the Kalansanan River in Inanam. The boy, identified as Mohd Razman Hailil went swimming at about 3.30pm Wednesday and his body was found by passers-by at about 3.55pm. He was pronounced dead when he was brought to the hospital.

Frequent flash floods concerns

The city had already experienced bad flash floods countless times. The public had already gave repeated calls to the government to improve the drainage system and better land development system to reduce the occurrence of flash floods over and over again, but seems there was little to no action been done to fix the problem so far.

Api Api assemblywoman, Christina Liew, has called on the state Government to take serious remedial measures to resolve the problem of flash floods in many areas in the state capital.

“What happened to our big KK development plan? Please include effective drainage system to prevent floods,” she said, as reported in The Borneo Post newspaper.

The Kota Kinabalu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) animal shelter/adoption centre was also devastated by the flash floods yesterday. The muddy floods was contributed by the hill cutting and clearing activity in Kampung Lomunu-Kibabaig, an activity that has been going on recently.

Emergency evacuation is currently in progress, they still urgently require more foster homes for cats and dogs. Public that could foster the animals can contact 016-8346674/019-8623314 to help out.

According to news sources, the rainy weather will continue on until next week.
