BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Mar 6, 2014: About 40 ASEAN telecommunications regulators recently converged at The Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong to discuss the progress of the 10-member bloc’s information and communications technology masterplan.

Delegates attending the ASEAN Telecommunication Regulators’ Council (ATRC) Joint Working Group (JWG) and Working Group (WG) Meeting reviewed the projects and initiatives listed in the ASEAN ICT Masterplan 2015 (AIM2015).

Organised by the Ministry of Communications and facilitated by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), the three-day workshop, which ends today, also discussed regulatory issues such as quality of service for broadband Internet access and Mobile TV, as well as promoting cyber security initiatives. Brunei was represented by officials from AITI.

In his opening remarks, Hj Yahkup Hj Menudin, AITI’s chief executive, said he appreciated the progress that had been made in the implementation of AIM2015. He also said it was important that regulators worked together to ensure all ASEAN citizens benefited from the growth in the telecommunication industry.

Among the initiatives in Brunei Darussalam that Hj Yahkup highlighted were TelBru’s Fibre-To-The-Home projects, high-speed mobile broadband by DST that uses LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology and AITI’s project to review its current policies and licensing framework to cater to a converged telecom and broadcasting sector.
