Esscom D-G: Sabah’s east coast is safe

LAHAD DATU, Dec 5: Tourism spots along Sabah’s east coast are safe despite the recent murder-cum-kidnapping incident on Pom Pom island resort off Semporna, Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) Director-General Datuk Mohammad Mentek said.

Giving this assurance to visiting European Union (EU) ambassadors, Mohammad said that the Nov 15 incident in Semporna which occurred in one of the 10 districts put under the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone), was an isolated case perpetrated by criminals.

As such, Mohammad said foreign tourists should not be unduly worried as places of interest in the east coast of Sabah, including island resorts were well-guarded by local security forces.

He was giving a briefing on the role and function of Esscom to a EU delegation, including seven ambassadors led by Luc Vandebon at the Marine Police Base here Thursday.

Mohammad urged foreign embassies to be understand the situation and there was no need for them to issue travel alert advisories to their citizens.

“As far as Esszone is concerned, security is in place, and I would like to affirm that life is going on normally in all parts of the Esszone and in the east coast of Sabah,” he said.
