KK hit by another blackout

KOTA KINABALU, May 6, 2014: Another blackout hit the State Capital and surrounding areas on Monday, leaving many people fuming and flabbergasted that massive power outages are continuing to happen despite repeated assurances by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).

Many businesses had to close early and court cases had to be adjourned.

In a brief statement here, the SESB said power disruptions started at 3.17pm affecting areas around Tanjung Aru, Sembulan, Kepayan, Putatan, Inanam, Alam Mesra, Sepanggar and Lok Kawi.

SESB said power was gradually restored beginning 4.33pm the same day.

At the same time, SESB was still conducting investigations to find out the cause of the blackout.

“Any inconvenience is much regretted,” said SESB in the statement.

On Jan. 17, Sabah was hit by a total blackout, which was a repeat of a similar incident in April 2012.

SESB had explained that the Jan. 17 incident was due to an Independent Power Producer’s (IPP) decision to shut down its gas turbines for safety reasons.

Preliminary findings revealed by SESB showed that Ranhill’s power plant decided to shut down the gas turbines after encountering a technical problem, causing power to fluctuate and trip.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and the State Cabinet had reminded SESB to ensure there would be no recurrence of the incident.
