Sabah International Folklore Festival (SIFF) provides the opportunities for the culture enthusiasts to enjoy and witness the beauty and uniqueness of cultural dance performance by various ethnics of the world. SIFF is truly meant to be an East-West Cultural rendezvous in promoting peace through culture.

The main objective of the Sabah International Folklore Festival is to promote culture tourism among participating countries and to introduce the state’s rich and unique cultures. The objectives of the event are as follow:

To promote understanding and goodwill;
To celebrate mankind brotherhood through cultures;
To promote culture tourism among participating countries; and
To promote Sabah as an attractive tourists’ destination in Asia: Malaysia Truly Asia

Introducing Juno Kim @ Runaway Juno, currently ranked #2 on Google’s Top 100 Travel Blogs List, who will be showing her photography solo exhibition “RESPECT” starting 13 June 2014.

Juno has taken a break from her successful career as a mechanical engineer in Korea, and has now travelled over 30 countries, over the course of 3 years.

I grew up in Korea, a small country with a homogeneous culture.

The word Korean encompasses everything: country, people, culture, cuisine, language, and so on. Koreans are known for their conservative traditions and long and complex history.

While I was growing up, I couldn’t wait to get out after I found out about this wild & exciting world, so I did. I travelled non-stop for the past three years to over 30 countries, and encountered many different cultures, customs, races and ethnicities.

People often ask why I travel.

I love finding similarities and differences between my own culture and others. It was surprising to see similar mindsets and lifestyles in countries on the other side of the globe. I thought I was (Koreans were) isolated and different, but it turns out we are all the same. We just do the same things differently.

During this process I found deep respect for others who are living with their traditions. Traditional clothes, foods, lifestyle, and so on. At the same time, I found a new respect for my own culture. I now appreciate that I have a different background even more, that I grew up in such a homogeneous culture in a country with a 5,000-year-old history, and I know exactly what my culture is.

I’m proud to be Korean. Sometimes you have to go away to see things at home clearly, and that’s what has happened to me.

The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) in cooperation with CAD Centre for Arts and Design, supported by the Sabah Tourism Board proudly present a new music collaboration between Japanese and Malaysian musicians to seek new form of tradition and collaboration through music.

Through this program, experienced group Ryuz, which consists of folk singer/drummer Shigeru Kitsu, tsugaru shamisen player Nobuto Yamanaka, and outstanding vocal Kazuki Kunihiro, will be coming to Sabah to seek more collaborators through their unique fusion of Japanese traditional and contemporary music. They will also be performing at the 2014 Rainforest World Music Festival.

The project will mark the first collaboration project between ASEAN artists and Japanese artists under the new Asia Centre which was established within the Japan Foundation in April 2014 to further enhance communication and collaboration between Asia.
